The School of Languages Holds a Workshop On Corpus Linguistics

The School of Languages, University of Ghana and the ESRC Centre for Corpus Approaches to Social Science, Lancaster University, UK have organized a one-day workshop on Corpus Linguistics at the University of Ghana Computing Systems (UGCS) for faculty and graduate students. The workshop was aimed at equipping participants on the versatile methodology for language analysis and focused on the analysis techniques and tools which they could apply to their own data.

The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Andrew Hardie, a Reader in Linguistics and the Deputy Director of the ESRC Centre for Corpus Approaches to Social Science, Dana Gablasova, a Senior Research Associate at the ESRC Centre for Corpus Approaches to Social Science, Lancaster University, and Dr. Mark McGlashan, a research assistant at the Centre for Cyber Security, Warwick University.

There workshop participants were mostly members of faculty from the University of Ghana, as well as a visiting scholar from the University of Ibadan.

Topics that were covered included Introduction to corpus linguistics, Corpora and language learning, Corpora and discourse, using the AntConc sotware, and using the GraphColl software.
