Theme: ‘Multilingualism in the African Context: Resource or Challenge’

The School of Languages (College of Humanities, University of Ghana), in conjunction with the Language Centre (University of Ghana) and Central University College (Ghana), cordially invites proposals for the maiden School conference to be held from 27-29 October, 2015 at the University of Ghana. The conference, which is on the theme  ‘Multilingualism in the African Context: Resource or Challenge’, seeks to attract seasoned and budding scholars from around the world to discuss pertinent issues relating to language, literary and cultural practices as set within our highly multilingual African settings.

Papers, posters and panel presentations are invited on the subthemes listed below. Presenters are however not restricted to the underlisted sub-themes and are welcome to present on other related topics.

1. Phonetics/ Phonology/ Morphology/ Semantics/ Pragmatics/ Sociolinguistics/  Psycholinguistics, and other areas of  Linguistics
2. Multilingualism in urban and rural contexts in Africa
3. Language Policies and Practice in Africa
4. Mother-tongue based multilingual education
5. Language in Education
6. Language and the Media in Multilingual  Africa
7. Language variation in urban Africa (Youth, Gender, etc.)
8. African Literature and Multilingual Practices
9. African literature, Modern Languages and the Challenge of Translation
10.  African Literatures and the Challenge of Globalisation/    

 Cosmopolitanism

11.  Literature, the Visual Art and the Digital Media
12.  Literature and Political Causes
13.  Children’s Voices in Contemporary African Literature
14.  Emerging Discourses on African Language Literatures

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Anonymous single-spaced abstracts or description of panels (in Word or pdf), addressing the theme of the conference should be sent electronically to the following e-mail addresses:

Abstracts should be formatted according to the following guidelines:

1. Title – Bold, font 14, Centre alignment.
2. Abstract – 300 words maximum. Abstracts should highlight the problem being investigated, methodology, significance of the study, as well as its findings.

Details of authors' names, institutional affiliations, and e-mail addresses should be sent on a separate sheet, bearing the title of the paper, to the same e-mail addresses.

Proposal of panels should consist of:

1. Title of the Panel
2. Convener
3. Proposed Panellists
4. Discussant (if necessary)
5. Description of Panel should not be more than 500 words                        maximum

Important Dates:

Submission Deadline:                15 August 2015.
Notification of Acceptance:        31 August 2015.

Deadline for Registration:          30 September, 2015.

Students and non-tertiary teachers:      50 Ghana Cedis
International Participants:                     100 US Dollars
