History
The School of Languages was created in September 2014 with the University of Ghana’s move to a Collegiate System of Governance. The teaching units of the School; the English, French, Modern Languages and Linguistics departments were formerly under the Faculty of Arts. The University deemed it necessary to bring these departments with similar disciplines, that is, Languages, together to consolidate cutting edge and relevant teaching and research in Languages. During its first year, the School had a total student population of 4,026, out of which 265 were graduate students.
The School forms part of the College of Humanities, whose Provost is Professor Samuel Agyei-Mensah. The units of the School of Languages have for several decades been involved in the teaching and learning as well as research into various aspects of language structure and usage, in addition to its associated literary and related cultural studies.
The current Dean of the School, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, a Senior Lecturer and researcher in Linguistics, is the first Dean of the School.
